About this session

For the last 20 years we have been experimenting and craft high-performance digital experiences. There are tons of places to read about the theory. So we’re taking a more practical approach. Tailored to charity interactions and two recent case studies (UK and Australia). You’ll learn key insights from both a donation form optimization project and a community event fundraising project.

What’s more we’re doing it twice. First we’re dedicating a session to all the Aus / NZ #FRO2021 crew. Then we’ll get the performers back on stage again for the US / EMEA folks!

But that’s not all. Would you like some advice about your own donation form? For a couple of lucky winners we’ll also review your donation form. You’ll get key steps to improve your supporter conversion rates, and be a hero for the #FRO2021 crowd too! To get your form reviewed, send it to community@resource-alliance.org

We’ll be taking questions as we go. Following the prepared content, we’ll open for Q&A plus discussion.

At the end of the session you will know more about:

  • The two fundamentals (platform and analytics) you need in place before you start optimisation
  • Benchmarks to help you steer your optimization work
  • 3 to 5 simple changes you could make to your donation and registration forms ASAP

The best part? Our “best question”, “worst donation journey” and “most insightful tip shared” prizes are on offer to those who attend each workshop.

How do you convince funders of the value of investing in a member-led network?

How do you convince funders of the value of investing in a member-led network?

REGISTER FOR #FRO2021

About this session

This session will frame the challenge of getting funders to invest in network-based solutions to social change, and offer potential approaches to addressing these:

The Challenge:

Networks are by their nature are very different to programmatic interventions in that network journeys are often non-linear with multiple potential pathways to impact that are not always obvious from the outset. In this context, funders can often shy away from investing in networks as their impact feels too uncertain or undermined.

We will open up the conversation about how we can most effectively communicate the value of investing in networks, asking probing questions around:

How are you currently measuring progress and impact for your network-based intervention?

How are you currently communicating development and impact of your network to key funders and stakeholders?

One Approach:

Gwen Beeman, Analyst at The Small Foundation will then talk us through one emergent approach around tracking network evolution of connection and coordination to support telling the story of your network’s current and potential future long-term impact.

Is the third sector over-reliant on Facebook?

Is the third sector over-reliant on Facebook?

REGISTER FOR #FRO2021

About this session

This panel discussion will explore four main questions, around whether the third sector is over-reliant on Facebook:

  • As seen by the July 2020 boycott, Facebook can often be a complicated partner to work with. What were your organisation’s positions on the boycott and ongoing political and data issues of working with Facebook?
  • According to a recent THINK Digital Forum benchmarker, some charities are driving as much as 75% of their paid marketing through Facebook. This poses significant risk if/when Facebook makes changes to the ad algorithm – what can we do to mitigate this risk?
  • The recent Facebook Challenge model (of driving supporters from Facebook ad to group and then to fundraise on the platform) has proven incredibly successful. Will this be a permanent disruption to the events and community fundraising landscape or was it a case of the right model, at the right time?
  • There is some evidence to suggest that younger groups (Gen Y and Gen Z) are leaving the platform / not engaging with the platform in large numbers. Combined with the arrival of a new wave of social media (e.g. Tik Tok, Twitch and Snapchat), what are your organisations doing to engage with these new platforms and mitigate this demographic cliff edge?

Unlocking Diaspora Capital: Best practices for fundraising

REGISTER FOR #FRO2021

About this session

This panel will examine the increasing importance of diasporas for financing development in homeland countries, with a particular emphasis on diaspora philanthropy in our digital world.  Technology has fundamentally changed the power of diasporas, but how can we best harness and enhance this power of  diasporas as communities of change

Among the questions we will address are:

  1. The changing ecosystem of diasporas — lost actors as new assets, and why are diasporas more important than ever to their homeland countries?  What networking tools can best tap their potential?  Should the focus be charity or philanthropy?
  2. How can diaspora capital be transformed from traditional remittances into more institutionalized giving and philanthropy?  What does it take to personalize the experience so that donors will give?
  3. What digital tools, platforms, and infrastructure (online giving, crowdfunding, peer-to-peer,, social media, branding, and other tools) are most critical for personalizing fundraising from diasporas, and how can they be applied to increase the trust that is essential for cultivating diaspora philanthropy?
  4. What is the experience of the African Diaspora in addressing the above issues?  What are the success stories?  What are the limits or constraints? How do you make the ask?
  5. What is the experience of the Albanian Diaspora in addressing the above issues?  What are the success stories?  What are the limits or constraints?  How do you make the ask?

Don’t pull up the ladder behind you: Supporting the next generation of fundraisers

Posted on: April 6th, 2021 by Ruby Chadwick

Discussion: How can we make sure to hold the ladder for those coming up behind us?

REGISTER FOR #FRO2021

About this session

Fundraising is a funny world, outside of which few people understand what it’s like to stress over the cost of T-shirts, the ethical sourcing of printed materials, or finding the most efficient (i.e. free) software for handling donations. For the sole fundraiser sitting at their desk in an organisation without a fundraising team, the role can be very isolating. For the newbie, finding your way in the industry can be a minefield – how do you know what training you need, or what networks to join? This discussion session will be all about how can we make our profession a little easier to navigate.

During our careers, we have all had the support of others to make it to the next rung on the ladder. From our first week on the job, before we had any idea what we were doing, to finishing our first year, managing our first campaign, or leading our first team, our mentors, friends, and colleagues helped us find our way. As our world is getting noisier and our roles are getting busier, how do we make sure that we are holding the ladder for the people coming up behind us?

This Fringe session is a discussion to map out what we can all do.

#FROFringe Australia and New Zealand: Creating unity in a divisive world

Creating unity in a divisive world

Friday 30th April at 13:00 – 14:30 AEST | 15:00 – 16:30 NZST

Australians and New Zealanders; Finally; we get to interact with the latest fundraising online with #FRO in our own time zone! We are looking forward to a lively session with a great line up of local stars as well as International insights. The added value is that we have a limited number of spots if you want to join in person in key cities for the session – Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Wellington for starters! And at a special price of £15 (approx. $30) which then gives access to the rest of the #FRO presentations on demand… So if you can make it along, not only will you get to enjoy the panel discussion but you will also have a chance to network further. If you prefer to join from wherever you are anyway – then please do, maybe even get some of your team together at your end to continue the conversation where you are.

The panel question is prompted by the increasing confusion that we see in the media through digital proliferation of new sources of information and ‘news’; whilst the tech giants increasingly control major channels of access and mis-information is rife. The result is the growth of political polarisation and conspiracy theories that gain momentum and scale. Into this confusion of truth and fake, manipulation and polarity how do we, as fundraisers, create campaigns that can both unite people behind a cause and raise money as a result.

Our panellists will look at this tangled web from a range of perspectives – through the lens of: people seeking Asylum in Australia; Human rights and development internationally; Climate crisis and environmental action; Domestic Violence and how we see these challenges influencing our efforts in each area.

Join us to hear the perspectives of experts, learn and network together – see you there,

How to register

You can register to attend this discussion either online, or in person at one of the 4 locations below. Numbers are limited at each of the venues so sign up now to secure your place. Registration to this session will also give you on demand access to the other FRO2021 sessions.

This session is presented in collaboration with Fundraising Institute Australia and Fundraising Institute of New Zealand.

About this session

Door-to-door fundraising and face-to-face networking with institutional donors was always slow; now, it’s mostly impossible. The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the digitisation of NGOs by ten years in a matter of months. And some NGO partners of MzN International are making substantial advances in digitising their funding and income work. From ever better segmentation in fundraising to outsourced bid-opportunity identification, there are game-changing opportunities for NGOs.

About this session

Success stories of the sharing economy inspired the development of a collaborative economy platform, with I4C testing the use of the digital sharing economy to support CSOs in their sustainability journey. Over the past four years, the concept has been tailored and prototyped across three regions: LAC, MENA, and Africa.
