Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Fundraising and Communication Course

KL Course session
Many Malaysian NGOs currently face difficulties in mobilising support for their causes. With the decline in global funding, NGOs must now look towards alternative strategies to sustain their work.

In response to this, a new 20-day course in fundraising targeted at staff/volunteers raising funds for their organisations was developed and launched in Malaysia in 2005.

This course set out to enable participants to mobilise a diverse range of financial and non-financial resources in order to improve their organisation's financial sustainability. The aim was that by the end of the course, participants would be proficient in several key areas:

  • Understanding major trends
  • Analysing the strengths and weaknesses of an organisation’s resource base and devising a plan on how to diversify it
  • Identifying main funding sources and appropriate techniques to secure them
  • Understanding the importance of communication in fundraising, and be able to set up effective communication with donors

The first pilot course was held at Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in September 2005, and was attended by 28 students. It now takes place annually with several rounds having been run since its launch. The next round of the course will start on 20 June 2008, and will finish on 15 August 2008.

The course fee will be RM 1,800.00 per participant, and will include course materials, refreshments and a Certificate of Achievement.
