Innovation Camp 2022: Inspiring disruption

Explore the horizons of disruption

This is your chance to reunite with innovators from all over the world! Innovation Camp 2022 will focus on the horizons of disruption and inspire radical perspectives. Yes, radical: new and different from what is usual or ordinary. This is a new time. Our challenge is to mobilise people, raise funds, and give the world hope for an optimistic future. Participants will explore art, science, new societal paradigms, the direction of technology, and other issues. As always, Innovation Camp will be an uncomfortable space, and you’re invited to leave your comfort zone and join in.

Driving fundraising innovation

Driving fundraising innovation

Embracing failure and moving forward

We readily share and celebrate successes, but could our greatest learnings come from sharing our failures? Analysing failure can tell us exactly what isn’t working, why it’s not working, and what we can do differently in the future. It also keeps us humble, agile, and rooted in a growth mindset.

During this session, our speakers will share the biggest mistakes they made in setting up and driving the fundraising innovation programme for UNICEF, as well as all the things they wish they had known. They will also seek the advice of participants because – through experience – they know that collaboration and knowledge-sharing are key to moving forward.

Donors shifting power

Donors shifting power

Donor-driven change and how it works in practice

A growing number of international donors are changing their policies and practices in response to increasing calls to decolonise aid and shift power to the people and organisations working on the ground. The session will be led by two experienced speakers representing both bilateral and private donors.

What has motivated them to do things differently? What do they aim to achieve and how does this work in practice? What are the implications for their grantees – both those that are based in the Global North and those based in the Global South? And what advice do they have when it comes to influencing other donors to adapt their policies to facilitate bottom-up ways of working?

Participants will reflect on the future of international cooperation to advance social justice, as well as on the implications for our roles, our programme design mechanisms, and our fundraising strategies. You will hear about the Giving for Change alliance, which brings together civil society organisations from different continents in partnership with the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and about how the work of Wilde Ganzen, the lead agency of the alliance, is impacted by promoting equal partnerships and ownership for those working on the ground.

Sharing and shifting power

Sharing vs. shifting power

New perspectives on how our work impacts working and living realities in the Global South

This session will offer insight into a hot – and sometimes contentious – topic in the international development world: how to carve new pathways to work in a dynamic of more equally shared power, within a system of international grant dispersion that makes very high demands on ngo and cbo partners in the global South, particularly the smaller ones. Participants will explore and – literally – experience the hurdles that these organisations need to take to bring in grants to secure their projects and future work. This gamified experience will flow into a group discussion on how to each of us can contribute and work towards a way that is more equal, more effective and more impactful.

Open-source creative collaboration

Global creative collaboration for the greater good

This session is inspired by an innovative project where senior fundraisers from multiple causes worldwide are collaborating to develop and live-test new approaches to fundraising, and openly sharing all ideas and results. We will share the process, gift you two new fundraising ideas, and work collaboratively with you to develop more ideas. If you wish, you will also have the chance to be a part of the ongoing process, so that you and your cause can benefit from ongoing learnings, creative ideas, and data.

The power of collaboration

The power of collaboration

Getting effective collaborations off the ground

In a time of global turmoil, Charities, NGOs, and social impact organisations are faced with the challenge of delivering more income and more impact with fewer resources. There is an appetite for collaboration across the sector, but we don’t see it manifest enough in reality. We know that most of the issues our charities exist to solve are too big for us to tackle on our own, so we need to better understand how to get collaborations off the ground, and, crucially, how to make them work effectively.

This interactive session will bring together peers from across the sector to explore applying different models of collaboration to some of society’s biggest challenges. Participants will apply learnings from the Good Lab, a collaboration of leading UK charities, industry experts, and experienced innovators, who worked together to design new ways for charities to fund their life-changing work with the ambition of creating £250m in new income for the sector.

Problem-solving IDEA (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access)

Problem-solving IDEA (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access)

A unconference session on IDEA (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access)

Ask your questions and submit issues you’re having related to IDEA in the fundraising sector! Facilitated under the unconference framework of OST (Open Space Technology), IDEA-related strategies will be explored with the session focusing on earnest discussion and problem-solving in breakout groups. By discussing real issues in small groups and in a safe space, participants will cultivate empathy and become leaders and problem-solvers rather than passive receivers.

The outcome of the session will include a short video produced for each topic discussed so that we can document our actions and develop next steps to be taken within our own organisations.

Fundraising, democracy, and the threat of extremism

Fundraising, democracy, and the threat of extremism

Resisting together in the face of rising right-wing ideologies

Democracy is in crisis. The values it embodies are under assault and in retreat globally. From Brazil to the United States and from Hungary to New Zealand, right-wing extremist groups and ideologies are posing a grave threat to democratic societies. Our work as fundraisers for a myriad of causes is being impacted by this crisis. The causes we work to further – the environment, healthcare, education, diversity and inclusion, feminism, you name it – need democracy.

This session will treat far-right extremism and undemocratic regimes as global problems that threaten our work and lives as organised civil society. How does the rise of undemocratic regimes affect our work as fundraisers? What can we learn from each other in order to resist together as citizens and as fundraisers? What can we do together, as a global group of fundraisers, to strengthen the resistance against undemocratic regimes? If we are shaping the future together, these questions must be addressed. By addressing these questions as a group, we will be return to our work fighting these undemocratic regimes stronger.

Ethics in fundraising

Ethics in fundraising

A lively & inspiring debate on ethics in fundraising & communications

Over the last few years, the world has seen a dramatic change. The pandemic, war, the global focus on movements like Black Lives Matter and #MeToo, and even things like the implementation of GDPR regulations have changed our perspectives. There is an urgent need across the world to adapt to the new status quo – which also applies to fundraising. Fundraising must be built on values and principles, inspired by the purest of motives. This has always been the case, but now, external factors are forcing us to review our ways of working. And that’s not a bad thing; we can and should play a proactive and positive role in these changes.

This lively, interactive workshop will include a thorough discussion of ethics in fundraising and how external factors can (and should!) influence the way we fundraise and communicate. Be ready for reflection, inspiration, and spirited debate!
