Leading Up

Building relationships of influence with people not expected to follow.

Leadership doesn’t just correlate with title or position; the ability to lead – and opportunities to do so – exist in and for many of us, even if we’re not in a so-called leadership role. Leading up – behaving and communicating in a way that influences those in higher levels of your organisation – encourages growth and development, furthers your mission, and can fully engage your CEO, board of directors, and other senior leaders.

Nonprofits maximise their fundraising and development opportunities when the entire organisation is involved and engaged. However, too many fundraisers report to or work with people in higher levels of their organisations who do not know or understand fundraising. This can cause frustration and burnout, leading to fundraisers leaving their organisations or even the sector entirely. Evidence-based skills for leading up can help fundraisers inform, encourage, and persuade those to whom they report.
